Susan Deacon MSP
Susan Deacon has been MSP for Edinburgh East and Musselburgh since the creation of the Scottish Parliament in May 1999. She was Scotland's first Minister for Health and Community Care following devolution, a position she held until November 2001.
Susan has served on a number of Parliamentary Committees and is currently a member of the Enterprise and Culture Committee and the Audit Committee. She was a founder member and is Co-Convenor of the Cross Party Group on Sexual Health and is Co-Convenor of the Cross Party Group on the Scottish Economy.
Susan's career began in local government in 1987. She worked in a range of service development and corporate policy roles before moving into management consultancy and training. In 1994 she became Director of MBA Programmes at Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University, a post she held until 1998 when she became a self-employed business and marketing consultant following the birth of her first child.
Susan has an MA in Social Policy and Politics and an MBA from Edinburgh University and is a member of the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development.
She has written and spoken widely on a range of subjects. Her areas of interest include early years and prevention, public service reform and the management of change.
Susan has a son (3) and a daughter (8).
