DAC John Yates

John YatesJohn Yates joined the Metropolitan Police Service in September 1981. He served as a Detective in North and West London and was Senior Investigating Officer at the ranks of Detective Chief Inspector and Detective Superintendent on over 20 murders.

As a Detective Superintendent, he led the corruption enquiry into the activities of the South East Regional Crime Squad based at East Dulwich throughout the early and mid-90s (Operation Russia). This was the first corruption case to utilise the evidence of both a female supergrass and a detective supergrass, the result of which was the imprisonment of 6 serving detectives to sentences totalling 46 years.

In 1999-2000, John worked as Staff Officer to Sir Paul (now Lord) Condon throughout the period of the Macpherson Inquiry into the death of Stephen Lawrence. In 2000, he became Borough Commander (Detective Chief Superintendent) for the London Borough of Barnet and in 2001 transferred as Acting Commander to the Specialist Crime Operational Command Unit with responsibility for homicide.

Between March and November 2002, he completed the Strategic Command Course at Bramshill Police Staff Training College. In November 2002 he was appointed to the role of Commander (Crime) for Territorial Policing with pan-London responsibility for reducing street crime, burglary and auto-crime as well as rape, public protection, missing persons, mental health, domestic violence and hate crime. He was also the ACPO lead on rape and serious sexual offences.

In January 2004, John was promoted to Deputy Assistant Commissioner, with the Director of Intelligence, Specialist Crime Directorate portfolio. This includes responsibility for covert policing, operational development, including activity to reduce drug related crime, homicide and the implementation of the National Intelligence Model.

In January 2005, he was seconded to the role of Gold Commander for Operation Bracknell, leading the UK policing response to the South East Asian Tsunami, requiring liaison with the F&CO, Cabinet Office and Home Office, as well as the Thai authorities. He was also involved in the UK's planning for dealing with any future disasters on a similar scale.

In March 2005, John took over the role of Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Director of Serious & Organised Crime, Specialist Crime Directorate, with responsibility for homicide, child abuse investigations, gun crime, covert policing, economic crime, as well as tackling organised criminal networks.

John is married with 2 children aged 15 and 12. His hobbies are many and varied, including cycling, cooking and being a serious supporter of Liverpool Football Club.
